Griffin’s Montana Mongoose Vise

Griffin Enterprises has recently introduced what they consider to be their best vise, the Montana Mongoose. A full rotary vise, and a real departure from the rest of their line.
Construction and material choices all seem to make good sense with this vise. A 3-1/2 lb. powder-coated steel base, satin-finished aluminum frame and long tool steel jaws that allow great access to the hook, even on huge flies. Griffin advertises the Mongoose as being able to handle hooks from 4/0 all the way down to #28. I tested them with a wide variety of hooks and can attest to the hook-holding power of the goose. While this may be well beyond the range required by most tiers, its peace of mind when investing in a tool that is designed (and guaranteed) to last a lifetime. The jaws are what’s referred to as the "parallel" jaw arrangement, the same design employed by the Renzetti Traveler and Abel Supreme vises. A small thumb screw located close to the tip of the jaws is used to set the gap between them to fit the size of the hook. A larger thumbscrew at the other end is for securing the hook. While changing the set-up for various hook sizes takes me less than 10 seconds, I find that if I set it for size #12, I can tie down to about a #16 or #18 too. The jaws are mounted to the arm so that adjustments in their position will allow for the hook to perfectly rotate on it’s axis. Again, maybe not necessary for all tiers, but makes the Mongoose "True" rotary.

Other features that make the Mongoose an excellent choice include and adjustable material clip mounted to the jaw arm, bobbin cradle, adjustable rotary tension…and a few freebies…. A C-Clamp, bobbin, hackle gauge…..and all packed-up in a handsome foam-padded carrying case. That’s allot of value and I think sets the Mongoose apart from it’s piers.

This vise is a very good-looking and functional tool. Its made by a company that specializes in manufacturing tying vises and carries a lifetime warranty. Anyone considering the purchase of a rotary vise should take a close look at this fine offering from Griffin Enterprises. Its built to last, and is a pleasure to tie with.
